The Government of India, during the 1950s, introduced the Craftsmen Training Scheme, under which a series of government-managed Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-run Industrial Training Centers (ITCs) were set up across the varied Indian states. The objective was to develop a pool of skilled manpower resources for meeting the labor requirements of the country’s varied industries.
The ITIs and ITCs are deemed as post-secondary schools and are governed by the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET), the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Union Government of India. Presently, in India, there are more than 14,000 vocational training centers that include over 2000 ITIs and over 12000 ITCs.

The aspiring candidates who are interested in pursuing the trade courses have an array of engineering and non-engineering trades that they can apply for – as per their preferences. Moreover, the trades are divided into NCVT and SCVT categories. However, bear in mind that the eligibility norms of the different courses vary, so only apply if you are eligible.
As part of the vocational training courses, the pupils have to undergo 1-year Apprenticeship training for gaining practical experience, following which they are conferred with the National Apprenticeship Certificate.
Moreover, they have to appear for the All India Trade Test (AITT). Upon successfully clearing the AITT, they are awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) or the State Level Trade Certificate (SCVT), depending on whether they have completed the NCVT or SCVT trade programs.
